Has anyone tried backup software or online backup services?

I am looking for one, because I am too lazy to do my backup manually. I often forget about it.

The backup software I found:

Site Vault, SmartBackup, Handy Backup

The online web backup service:

Novosoft Remote Backup

---

I liked the Novosoft solution. They backup your website and keep all the files online. No need to download them to your computer. Prices are also affordable.

I think I will go with their trial version.

Any thoughts or advice about backup solutions?

As many of our customers are already aware, VeriSign®, the organization who manages the .COM and .NET registry, has announced a price increase for both of these extensions beginning on July 1, 2010

VeriSign Price Increase

The price for .COM registrations will increase by 7% and the new price for .NET registrations will go up by 10%.

The VeriSign price increase will apply to new registrations as well as renewals that occur on or after July 1st. As a result we will be forced to increase our prices for .COM and .NET registrations and renewals starting July 1st as well.

We strongly advise our customers to avoid these price increases on their existing domain names by renewing your domain names before June 30, which will add an additional year of registration to your domain at the currently lower prices.

Name.com realizes that this price increase will have a financial impact on our customers so we've taken two additional steps to help you save money before the VeriSign price increase goes into effect.

I'm not sure if this is in the right place, mods please move at your discretion.

I take regular database backups and download them to my hdd and also copy them to a removeable hdd for safety. All very commendable I hear you say, but here is my problem, I have not got the know how or ability to restore these backups should the need arise. How is it done? Do I need any specialized software? I tried to restore my main database to my test forum to make testing more realistic using several guides that I googled but I couldn't do it.

Any pointers? I 'd rather figure this out now than try to do it in a genuine recovery situation.

I'm running vB 3.8.4 PL2

So, little known fact: VPS prices are often in line with Reseller and semi-dedicated accounts on the same hosting provider.

VPSes come with a great deal of freedom - and their own share of headaches. If all you need is more of the same, look into your host's reseller/semidedicated/etc. options for getting a similar share of server resources, without the hassle : )

I'm writing a series of articles that will go over the hardware, software, and tuning required to support highly active communities. I'm not drawing on just my experience from Elliquiy and Blue Moon here - I've helped a number of people with vBulletin setups, as well as conspired a great deal with Mark and Ben about overall server optimization, who have completely alien usage patterns to my own.

The hardware article is probably of limited use to people using VPSes, since the primary limitation there is the VPS itself. It's more geared to people who are just breaking out of that rut and wondering where to expand, and to somewhat dampen the expectation that you need multiple servers right off (Elliquiy apparently outperforms clusters of twenty machines... gah.)

They had a problem with the RAID and they 'rebuilt' the raid over the course of several days, they never say they replaced the RAID, although people are assuming that happened.

If they could read the information on the disk, then why didn't they copy the information onto another raid?

Why didn't they take the server offline to quickly fix the problem?

Why is that particular sever so busy? Why didn't they remove certain accounts from it and put them on another server?
Is what they did reasonable? Does it normally take 4-5 days to fix a problem like that?

About 3 weeks ago my dedicated server was upgraded to a quad core Intel with 8 gigs of memory. On that server I'am running 3 vbulletin forum, and about 5 wordpress blogs.

Out of all of those sites, only one gets any real traffic.

As long as the main site has around 300- 500 people on it at a time, everything is fine. Once we get 600+, and especially 700 people on the site, it starts slowing down to 5+ second response times.
Web Server: Apache v2.0.63 (cgi)
PHP: 5.2.11

I'm working on a client's website, and I'm trying to have backups made and sent to a folder above the public directory.

Usually, the file structure is something like:
/root
..../backups
..../public_html
......../forum
......../blog
..../public_ftp

And I would just have backups sent to a folder in /root/backups, meaning they aren't accessible to the public.
But with this GoDaddy hosting account, when I log into FTP, it appears that I am taken directly to the public folder. I can't seem to find a way to get to the root, non-public level. I hate how GoDaddy makes everything so difficult.

So is this possible? If so, how?

Thanks!
