In vBulletin, the little messages you can display depending on certain criteria (user's group, what they're viewing, date, etc.) are called "notices". I'm not sure what they're called on other platforms, or if any other forum script even has them, but I'm curious to know what everybody uses them for, and how they incorporate them into their community.

Personally, I use them for guest messages (registration prompts), community news or announcements, and birthday wishes (displayed only to the user whose birthday it is on that day).

... unappealing even if they are packed with never-ending activity? Not many people have forums that are so active, but the general vibe is that seeing too many sub-forums and categories is a turn-off, especially when they are hardly used (one of the biggest mistakes by new forum owners)... but what about when they're not stagnant?

Do you believe that there should be as many sections/sub-forums/categories as are dictated by activity levels, or do you believe that things should be kept to a minimum as much as possible?

A member of my forum has put forth a suggestion that entails the addition of a new forum or sub-forum to our already-massive list of sections. I think we do have enough discussions and threads that would warrant the addition of this new section, but I'm not sure. I hate the idea of adding it, it being un-used, and then having an empty section. I can always remove it, but I'd rather make the right decision the first time.

What kind of considerations do you make before adding a new section to your forum? Do you have set criteria or requirements?

I've encountered a few forum administrators and managers who, for one reason or another, keep their community membership private in some way. You must either meet certain requirements to join, you must be invited, or you must have heard of the forum in person as it isn't linked to from anywhere on the Internet, and remaining discreet in search engines is a priority.

For those of you who keep your membership on lockdown, why? Is your forum meant to be one for a select crowd, or do you just think it's easier to be small and cozy than popular with troublesome members?

Secondly, and this depends on what your goals with the forum are: how do you expand your membership while remaining so private and hidden? How do you attract the members you want, but not the troublesome members?

Good idea or not? I think it may possibly be beneficial from an SEO aspect, as it keeps unrelated discussions and subjects out of view from the spiders, and therefore keeps the ratio of relevant content higher. I'm not sure if it would make a big enough difference or not, but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

What are your thoughts? If you have thought about this before and considered both options, please share what choice you ended up making and why. :)

Does anybody have a very dumbed-down FAQ for users who are completely unfamiliar with forums? I have a thread that teaches users how to create a thread or reply to a post in order to ask their questions, and I even included an instructional video tutorial... but I'd like to know if a more extensive (but still very basic) guide exists and includes instructions related to attachments, profile features, etc.

Anybody know of one? How do you accommodate the members who don't know how to use a forum whatsoever?

At the moment we have our christmas additions up which are pretty ample IMO but are not offering any skin choice. Is it wise to?
You may check the additions out if you want although theyre minor changes:
