Anyone use IP Bookie on 3.1?

I know the official ibbookie.com mod has been abandoned. I talked to the author and he said he won't be updating it for 1pb3.1.

I run a football board and we are currently on vbookie (vb 3.8). It is a huge attraction for our site and I can't find an IPB alternative. I want to convert we are currently testing but this is a big issue for us.

Does anyone know of any other ipb bookie options for 3.1?

My gripe with IPB

So, a couple of months ago I purchased a IPB license, must say I love it. But I have a couple major complaints.

1) Why can't I find a skin to save my life. I don't care if I have to pay $30 for a nice skin, I just can't find a variety of good skins. I mean, CleanCut is awesome, and it looks like Carbon Blue is nice too. Butt seriously, not one Call of Duty Modern Warfare based skin. Free or paid. I won't convert my SMF board until I have a comparable skin. I mean, SMF has a better variety of FREE skins for their RC product. Which leads into my next gripe.

2) Why can't I find mods I am looking for for free. Seriously, Every mod I look for is like $5. Or more. Now, I don't mind paying for good mods, but a simple mod seems to cost these days. Stuff that is free on the org, cost $'s. I guess I am spoiled from all the mods available for vB, SMF, and phpBB. For free.

I have a question for Nick?

Now that IPB have released IPB 3.1 in Beta, have you not been tempted to give it a try? Just been looking at the IPB Forum and it's looking quite good. Just a pity I got an email yesterday saying my license renewal was up, then the next day they only go and release IPB 3.1 which I would have downloaded and tested to see what I thought about it.

Anybody else testing it, if so what's your first opinion of it compared to vBulletin 3.8

I've always hated how you could never get a preview of the first post of a topic by hovering over it like you could in vBulletin. But as I've just read on IPB's development blog (Invision Power Services -> IP.Board 3.1.0 Dev Update: Topic Preview), they've announced that this feature is comin' to town!

They've implemented it so elegantly and intelligently, It just looks so awesome. I think it's great to see that they're not only implementing many basic (but useful and important features) that vBulletin has had for so long... but they're doing it in style.

Looks like I'm gonna give IPB a go!

Yes he the massive vB fan is going to give IPB a shot!

I've been spending a bit of time on their forums these last few days and I like what I see a LOT. Their take on UX is similar to my own. The devs post regular updates and get involved in discussions and pre-sales threads. And their IP.C seems to be just what I wanted - a solution to create my own fields/custom content types type areas on my site.

I'll try to report back on how I get on - hopefully it's as good as it appears but you never know until you try it.

I've been told that if you ask for a 'vB switcher discount' they give you one! I don't know how much it is yet but no harm in asking right!?

Anyone else considering it?

Good Free IPB Mods

Im about to purchase IPB 3.0 once my mum gets back, for Design247, Im just wondering is there any good mods out there?

The ones im going to download and install are:

IP.Tracker - To keep tracks of bugs in the skins/templates.

iClient Download System - Unbranded versions of the styles for Premium Members/ special downloads.

Ticket System - Self explanatory

Would there be any other mods which would suite a site like mine? Or any other good mods in general.

For the style im going to try and import over StudioStyle which i think would suite it, Obviously im going to make it extremely good and alot better then the vB4 version because it will be the default on at the new forums.

How does the template system compare to vBs?
How did the db import go? Lose any data? Passwords remain intact?
How did it effect your SE results/page rank?
And most importantly... what did you users think? Has it had an impact on how many log-on now?

SEO for images

For my vb+vbseo forums I get lots of Traffic from Google Images, I don't have a gallery module, Just Images posted in Threads and Posts.

On the other hand hardly any Image shows up in Google Images for my 4 month old ipb forum.I have checked few other ipb forums with same results.
Including: IPB Google Images Results

The believe the way IPB show images in-line in posts is not search engine friendly.

Compare the actual page (2nd Post)

The tags disappeared in the cached page and the link shows up as text, So will be indexed as text not as an Image.

Is this an issue ?

To all vB to IPB switchers ... core features to you miss from vbulletin?

First lets get straight to the point: There are some core features of IPS - most noticable IP.Content - that are highly useful for me and are more than a substitute for missing features that vbulletin has.

Having said that ... What core features do you miss on IPB that were in stock on vbulletin? Currently I am looking forward to move to IPB but these things are important for me:

profile category privacy. Therefore before the transition I would need to put every profile field to "only viewable by user" for privacy reasons
auto-subscribe topics after you reply to a thread (admincp option)

Two IP.Blog file edits to help SEO

As I keep hammering about within IPB, I keep finding more ways to help improve SEO.

In http://www.adminaddict.net/forum/ipb...mization-5114/ I outlined a way to edit two IP.Board files to remove the forum name from the page title.

Now let's move on and edit two files to do the same with IP.Blog. If you make these two simple edits, it will prevent the forum name from being included on your blog page and on your blog entry pages. This will give more weight to your blog name and to your blog entries.

The first file to edit is /admin/applications_addon/ips/blog/modules_public/display/entry.php

The line you are looking for is in the block identified as -

//-----------------------------------------
// Page title and navigation
//-----------------------------------------

Find the following line -

Quote:

$this->page_title = $this->settings['board_name'] . " -> " . $entry['entry_name'];

Change it to -

Quote:

$this->page_title = $entry['entry_name'];

That will remove the forum name from the title of each blog entry page.

Next, you want to edit /admin/applications_addon/ips/blog/modules_public/display/blog.php

In the block identified as -

//-----------------------------------------
// Navigation bar + page title
//-----------------------------------------

Find the following line -

Quote:

Change it to -

Quote:

.htaccess failure - help!

So I was experimenting with redirects and the .htaccess file... and I failed.

Two things went wrong. First of all I tried to take the "www". out and redirect it to a URL that would just use "darkperfection" - or even vice versa but I just felt it was good to do something like that.

So ok, just remove the file? I can't see it. When I try to upload the .htaccess, it just disappears. I didn't even see one before I added one to make the changes, so I just assumed I didn't have one until I realized that "darkperfection.org/forum" no longer redirected to my forum homepage.

I use this link everywhere and it's really easy to type out. Could anyone educate me on how to change it back and keep my .htaccess file viewable? I am really at a loss at this point. From the link I posted above, from when I asked about one community, it worked when I tried it. I edited the textandshoot out and put in darkperfection and I guess it just does work the same for IPB 2.3 or maybe it's my host?

Sidebar close box annoys me

Is it just me or does anyone else get annoyed by the location of the close button for the sidebar?

I know it can be 'skinned out' but 99.99% of IPB skins I have seen still have it in the same spot. So I am assuming everyone else likes it? I can't profess to be design guru, but it seems like a lot of wasted white space and it seems to break up the look between the forum list and the blocks. I also wish to god there was a global sidebar. Seems inconsistent when some pages have it (blogs, forum list, portal and some content pages) while others don't.

Just curious as every time I look it is haunting me. Mocking me. Laughing at me.

I need to get out more.
